GMA at 2020 PPP: Family History

By Aaron Brennt Eusebio

From November 20 to December 23, Filipino cinephiles will have a chance to watch hundreds of award-winning local films in the online edition of the 2020 Pista ng Pelikulang Pilipino (PPP).

Although this is the first edition of the film festival to be held virtually, the Film Development Council of the Philippines still wants viewers to enjoy the community experience of watching films together by having four virtual cinemas named Manila, Iloilo, Davao, and Nabunturan.

Unlike most streaming platforms where people choose which film they want to watch, the FDCP channel gives viewers access to four virtual cinemas with scheduled livestream screenings of different films.

One of the award-winning films that cinephiles can watch during the Pista ng Pelikulang Pilipino is Michael V.'s "labor of love," the 2019 movie Family History, produced by GMA Pictures and Mic Test Entertainment.

Michael V's directorial debut proved to everyone that he is a creative force to be reckoned with. Aside from directing Family History, Direk Bitoy also stars in the movie alongside Dawn Zulueta. He also wrote the script and produced the movie through Mic Test Entertainment.

Family History tells the life story of Alex Dela Cruz (Michael V.), a happily married man who finds himself at a crossroads when a life-changing disease challenges his marriage to May (Dawn Zulueta).

This family-drama movie also stars Miguel Tanfelix, Bianca Umali, John Estrada, Paolo Contis, Ina Feleo, Kakai Bautista, and highly-respected actor Nonie Buencamino.

Primetime King Dingdong Dantes and multi-awarded comedienne Eugene Domingo played exceptional roles in the film as well.

The Cinema Evaluation Board gave Family History a B for “its effective film sensitively directed by Michael V.”
