Gawad Urian Best Actress Janine Gutierrez is thrilled to join ranks of admired Filipino actresses

Janine Gutierrez expressed both joy and gratitude for winning the Best Actress award in the recently concluded 43rd Gawad Urian Awards.

The Kapuso actress won for her portrayal in the 2019 psycho-thriller Babae at Baril.

Janine plays the role of a saleslady whose life changed drastically after finding a gun on her doorstep.

She edged out other nominees including Alessandra de Rossi (Lucid), Jean Garcia (Watch Me Kill), Bella Padilla (Mañanita), Nadine Lustre (Ulan), Kathyrn Bernardo (Hello, Love, Goodbye), and the late Anita Linda (Circa).

Babae at Baril bagged a total of six awards including Best Cinematography and Best Director for Rae Red.

In an Instagram post, Janine thanked the people behind the Gawad Urian for “acknowledging everything we were trying to achieve with this film for Filipina women.”

She also recognized the team behind the movie, saying, “So honored and humbled and grateful to be part of team #BabaeAtBaril!!

“Hindi man tayo nakadalo sa New York at Osaka, ibang klaseng karangalan ang mapansin ng ating Gawad Urian (at para sa akin, mapasama sa hanay ng mga artistang matagal ko nang hinahangaan!)”

Janine now joins the ranks of past Gawad Urian Best Actress awardees such as Nora Aunor, Charito Solis, Vilma Santos, Lorna Tolentino, Gina Alajar, Judy Ann Santos, and Maricel Soriano.

Incidentally, Janine's grandmother, the “Superstar” Nora Aunor, was the first winner of the said award back in 1976 for the film, Tatlong Taong Walang Diyos.

Nora in total won the prestigious award seven times and holds the record as the most nominated actress for the award with 21 nominations under her name.
