GMA at 2020 PPP: Saranggola
From November 20 to December 13, Filipino cinephiles will have a chance to watch hundreds of award-winning local films in the online edition of the 2020 Pista ng Pelikulang Pilipino (PPP).
Although this is the first edition of the annual film festival to be held virtually, the Film Development Council of the Philippines still wants viewers to enjoy the community experience of watching films together by having four virtual cinemas named Manila, Iloilo, Davao, and Nabunturan.
Unlike most streaming platforms where people choose which film they want to watch, the FDCP channel gives viewers access to four virtual cinemas with scheduled livestream screenings of different films.
One of the internationally-acclaimed films cinephiles can watch at the 2020 Pista ng Pelikulang Pilipino is the Philippines' official entry to the Best Foreign Language Film at the 72nd Oscars, Saranggola, directed by Gil Portes and produced by GMA Films.

Saranggola tells the story of widowed ex-cop Homer (Ricky Davao) and his ten-year-old son Rex (Lester Llansang). Homer is a kind father to Rex but he is considered a bully in their neighborhood, partly because of his job as a police. One day, Homer accidentally kills a child who is retrieving a snarled kite but he quickly covers up his error. Unknown to Homer, Rex witnessed how he killed the boy.
Joining Ricky and Lester in the movie were Jennifer Sevilla, Roy Alvarez, Sining Blanco, and Mark Gil.
Directed by internationally-acclaimed director Gil Portes, Saranggola won several awards at the 2000 FAMAS Awards for Lester and at the 2000 Gawad Urian Awards for Best Director. The movie was also nominated at the 1999 Moscow International Film Festival and at the 2000 Young Artist Awards.
