Marvel to cast a Filipino actress in 'Spider-Man 3' according to a report

By Bong Godinez

The new installment of the Spider-Man film franchise starring Tom Holland will offer new surprises and fresh faces - and that includes a Filipino actress for one of the roles.

According to an article published by the US-based pop culture website, The Direct, Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures are “casting a Filipina actress within the age range of 50-80 years old for a small supporting role” in the movie.

The role is for a relative of Ned Leeds, who is the best friend and classmate of Peter Parker (Tom Holland).

Filipino-American actor Jacob Batalon portrays the role of Ned in the film franchise.

“Such casting would essentially imply that Ned has the same nationality as Batalon, further paying homage to the real-life background of the actor. More so, this serves as a positive step for Sony and Marvel Studios to further strengthen Asian representation in their films,” wrote Aeron Mer Eclarinal.

It wasn't clear though if Marvel and Sony have already found an actress to portray the part or are still holding auditions for the role.

Initial reports said that the story will include appearances by Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) and references to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The movie is currently in production and eyes to hit theaters in December 2021.
