Demon Slayer and Spirited Away

All hail the new king, Tanjiro Kamado!

Who would have thought that the adventures of Tanjiro Kamado will become a phenomenon in Japanese society?

Now, the movie 'Demon Slayer: Mugen Train' reached an important milestone and claimed box office supremacy in the Land of the Rising Sun, while the whole world is still grappling with the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to a report by GMA News Online, 'Demon Slayer' demolished the box office success of Studio Ghibli's 'Spirited Away' -- the same movie that won in the Best Animated feature category in the Oscars in 2003.

Based on the data collated from Crunchyroll, 'Demon Slayer' has generated 32,478,895,850 yen ($313,513,909) at the Japanese box office in 73 days.

The anime movie follows the adventure of Tanjiro, who becomes a demon slayer after his family was tragically murdered, while his sister Nezuko was turned into a demon.

With its box office might, 'Demon Slayer' even surpassed the records achieved of two other movies, 'Titanic' (1997) and another hit fantasy anime film 'Your Name' (2016).

In an Agence France-Presse report published by GMA News Online, it analyzed why the story of Tanjiro Kamada resonated so well with Japanese moviegoers.

In their exclusive interview with Assistant Professor Yuka Ijima, who focuses on manga and psychology in the Daito Bunka University, she explained that 'Demon Slayer' focuses on relevant themes, like family ties and the battle between evil and good.

Professor Ijima said, "In the past, the concept of a 'demon' was used to embody invisible, frightening threats, like diseases and epidemics including smallpox."

GMA News Online has also reported back in November that 'Your Name' director Makoto Shinkai reacted on Twitter after he learned that 'Demon Slayer' has already surpassed the box-office result of his anime film.

He said then, "Wow, already?! I feel frustrated, but at the same time, I know it's the healthiness of the entertainment industry that records are constantly getting updated."

"I'll keep on going every day in order to make nice movies as well," Shinkai added.

Meanwhile, Pinoy anime fans were able to catch the action-packed film last month, when mall giant SM Supermalls announced that 'Demon Slayer: Mugen Train' would open in select cinemas.
