South Korea has been dominating the world of entertainment as of late.

Aside from the phenomenon known as K-pop, the Land of the Morning Calm is dishing out hit K-dramas, award-winning films, and scary nimble zombies in TV and the movies with great success.

Now, South Korea has its sights set on the future - and in outer space.

Streaming platform Netflix just dropped the teaser of the ambitious sci-fi movie, Space Sweepers.

Touted as “The Korean Star Wars” and the “first Korean space blockbuster,” the space opera is generating a lot of buzz from sci-fi fans intrigued by its plot.

Set in 2092, Space Sweepers tell the story of a group of space junk miners scavenging the universe for space debris.

The dysfunctional crew is composed of space pilot Tae-ho (Song Joong-Ki), enigmatic ex-space pirate Captain Jang (Kim Tae-Ri), engineer Tiger Park (Jin Sun-Kyu), and former military robot Bubs (Yoo Hai-Jin).

Eventually, the team stumbles upon a crashed spacecraft and finds a little girl named Dorothy inside.

As it turns out, the girl is the humanlike robot - classified as a weapon of mass destruction - wanted by UTS Space Guards, and the crew decides to demand a ransom to turnover their precious find.

And while it has all the hallmarks of an epic sci-fi affair, director Cho Sung-hee pointed out that the movie's core is not detached from current reality.

“The space sweepers, although they live in space, they do not belong in the affluent society,” director Cho Sung-hee said in a press conference in August.

“They are similar to immigrant workers -- struggling to earn a living. Although the film is set in a completely different world from now, the characters inside the story are not that much different from people today.

“[The sweepers] still worry about mundane everyday problems like loans, interest rates, and paying their bills on time. They still eat rice and doenjang jjigae.

“In this film, instead of these Hollywood heroes clad in fancy suits featuring all these superpowers, it's about normal people -- Koreans who zoom around space in their spaceship. That's the biggest characteristic and difference the film offers.”

Reports said that the movie has the potential to become a big franchise, with Merry Christmas, the company backing the film, hoping to see Space Sweepers branch out to games, TV, and animation.

Space Sweepers will hit Netflix on February 5.
