LIST: 2021 Oscars nominated films for Best Picture and where to watch them

Most cinemas in the country are still closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic that has dragged on for a year. But, that doesn't mean you can't go see this year's highly anticipated movies, especially the ones nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars. Our favorite streaming services and video-on-demand platforms are here to save the day.

Below are this year's nominees for Best Picture at the upcoming 93rd Academy Awards on April 25. Get a glimpse of what to expect from these films and where and how you can watch them.

Minari

Set in the '80s, Minari is a drama film about a family of South Korean immigrants trying to acclimate to life in rural America.

It stars Steven Yeun, who just made history as the first-ever Asian American actor nominated for an Oscar Best Actor award.

You can watch it on video-on-demand platforms such as Apple TV, Amazon Prime, Google Play, Vudu, Redbox, and YouTube.

Promising Young Woman

As its title suggest, the film is dark comedy thriller about a promising young woman who drops out of medical school to avenge her best friend, who was a rape victim.

Playing the promising young woman is Carey Mulligan, who's nominated for an Oscar for Best Actress in a Leading Role.

You can buy or rent Promising Young Woman on video-on-demand platforms such as Amazon Prime, Google Play, Apple TV, YouTube, Vudu and Fandango.

Sound of Metal

Sound of Metal stars Riz Ahmed, also an Oscar nominee for Best Actor in a Leading Role. Riz plays a punk-metal drummer who loses his hearing and starts a new life in the deaf community.

You can watch this drama film directed and co-written by Darius Marder on Amazon Prime.

The Father

The Father is a heartbreaking drama about dementia. It stars two acting powerhouses, Anthony Hopkins and Olivia Colman, who are both nominated for an Oscar this year.

You can buy it on video-on-demand platforms beginning March 26, such as Amazon Prime, Apple TV, Google Play and Vudu.

Mank

Mank is a biopic about unsung screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz, who helped Orson Welles write the iconic film Citizen Kane.

It stars Gary Oldman and Amanda Seyfried, who are both nominated for an Oscar for their respective roles.

It's directed by David Fincher and leads this year's Oscars nominations with 10. It's available for streaming on Netflix.

The Trial of the Chicago 7

The Trial of the Chicago 7 is based on the true story of a group of anti-Vietnam War protestors known as the Chicago Seven.

Its star-studded cast include Sacha Baron Cohen, Eddie Redmayne, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

You can watch the Chicago Seven biopic on Netflix.

Nomadland

Nomadland is one of the top contenders for Best Picture this year, having bagged several awards in different film festivals. It's directed by Chloe Zhao, also an Oscar nominee for Best Director, and already won at the recently concluded Golden Globes for her work on the said film.

The story revolves around a woman named Fern, played by Academy Award winner Frances McDormand, who packs her van and hits the road to become a modern-day nomad. The film also features real-life nomads who will be Fern's mentors.

You can view Nomadland on Hulu. It's free for subscribers and if you haven't yet, you can subscribe for $6 a month. Unfortunately, for those living in the Philippines, you would have to wait till it becomes available on other platforms or perhaps until movie houses finally reopen.

Judas and the Black Messiah

Judas and the Black Messiah is a biographical drama about Fred Hampton, chairman of the political organization called Black Panther Party.

It stars Daniel Kaluuya, who won a Golden Globe award for his portrayal and is also nominated for an Oscar for Best Actor in a Supporting Role.

Judas and the Black Messiah was available on HBO Max for one month as part of Warner Bros.' plan to simultaneously release the film through streaming and in theaters. So, stay tuned for its theatrical release date here in the Philippines.
