Olivia Culpo speaks up about her viral Miss Universe meme

By Racquel Quieta

Miss Mexico Andrea Meza was crowned as Miss Universe 2020 in the recently concluded coronation night on May 16.

While it was clearly Andrea's shining moment, one of the hosts of the much-awaited beauty pageant, Olivia Culpo, somewhat unknowingly stole the show with her facial reaction.

After the 69th Miss Universe pageant, Olivia became a trending topic on Twitter, and memes of her facial reaction while reading the announcement cards went viral.

Olivia, who's a former Miss USA winner and the crowned Miss Universe 2012, can be seen in the memes reading the cards with a very serious face.

This led many to speculate that Olivia perhaps was in disbelief of who the winner was.

In case you haven't got wind of it yet, there are some people questioning Miss Mexico's win, saying that some of the runners-up deserve the crown more.

Among the runners-up were Miss Brazil Julia Gama (first runner-up), Miss Peru Janick Maceta (second runner-up), Miss India Adline Castelino (third runner-up), and Miss Dominican Republic Kimberly Jimenez (fourth runner-up).

However, in a series of Instagram stories, Olivia shut down the rumors about her now viral Miss Universe meme.

She clarified that she was not in doubt of the Miss Universe 2020 winner.

"I don't think I have ever concentrated so hard on reading in my life than when announcing the winner of Miss Universe this weekend," she wrote. "I was so terrified of reading the wrong country."

Olivia then apologized for unintentionally causing controversy about the announcement of the winner.

"Apparently I need to work on my reading face and I'm sorry if this was misinterpreted in any type of way.

“I swear I was just concentrating on the words.

"Every girl was beautiful and most importantly, so sweet and kind."

In 2015, Miss Universe host Steve Harvey wrongly announced Miss Colombia Ariadna Gutierrez as the winner, instead of Miss Philippines Pia Wurtzbach.

He went back to the stage a few minutes later to correct his mistake.

Although Steve Harvey has since been forgiven by both Pia and Ariadna, that moment will go down in history as one of the most unbelievable and most unforgettable announcements of the Miss Universe winner.

Thankfully, no slip-up happened during the Miss Universe 2020 coronation night.

Olivia Culpo's extreme concentration paid off after all.
