Cristine Reyes recalls traumatic Ondoy experience as heavy rains hit Metro Manila

By Bong Godinez

The downpour currently being experienced in Central and Southern Luzon has brought back unpleasant memories to actress Cristine Reyes.

Posting on Instagram, Cristine recalled the devastating 2009 typhoon Ondoy that hit Luzon, leaving many parts of Metro Manila submerged in water after hours of non-stop rain.

Cristine experienced Ondoy's wrath firsthand after she and her family had to be rescued from the roof of their two-story house in Provident Village in Marikina as floodwaters rose.

In her latest post, Cristine remembered the ordeal as rain continues to pour in Metro Manila accompanied by an early morning earthquake that jolted many residents from their sleep on Saturday, July 24.

“Living on top of a building and then waking up with an earthquake made me jump out of my bed feeling so terrified,” Cristine wrote.

“This weather gives me anxiety. It reminded me of the devastating flash flood caused by typhoon Ondoy.

“I have seen people got locked up trying to break their own windows and heard people screaming for help until you hear them no more.

“Some drowned and some like me was able to swim fast while assisting my precious little nieces, little sister and my mom. We all climbed up on the roof with baby snakes and rats dangling on my [and] our body. It was horrible and traumatic.”

She continued, “In times like this, when you have no control of things around you, there's only one thing I consistently do. I speak to Him.”

Typhoon Fabian has already left the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) last Friday, July 23, but continues to enhance the southwest monsoon, bringing moderate and heavy rains in many parts of Luzon, according to the state weather bureau PAGASA.
