Kapuso stars, showbiz personalities celebrate Hidilyn Diaz's historic Olympic gold win

The Philippines finally ended its 97-year Olympic gold medal drought on Monday courtesy of weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz.

The Zamboanga native clinched the elusive gold medal in Tokyo, Japan after completing an overall lift of 224 kilograms, which is a new Olympic record by itself.

She competed in the women's 55 kg weightlifting event.

Hidilyn's win was met with jubilation and pride by her kababayans, who took to social media to extend congratulations to the country's first Olympic gold medalist.

Among those who commended Hidilyn were local celebrities in awe of the historic and extraordinary feat.

Kapuso hunk Derek Ramsay praised Hidilyn and highlighted rigorous training that she endured en route to the victory.

Lolong star Ruru Madrid shared a photo of Hidilyn and wrote “Salamat.”

Gabbi Garcia could barely contain her amazement when Hidilyn set an Olympic record. “GOLD!” Congratulations, Hidilyn Diaz!” exclaimed Miguel Tanfelix on his Instagram story.

Lexi Gonzales also took to Instagram to applaud the historic moment.

Kate Valdez lifted a photo from GMA News showing an emotional Hidilyn moments after she made history.

Comedienne Pokwang joined the entire nation in congratulating the Olympic gold medalist. “Mabuhay ka Hidilyn! Good news naman tayo woohoo,” she wrote proudly.

Yasmien Kurdi, Kyline Alcantara, and Reese Tuazon, who have been vocal advocates of body positivity and women empowerment, also commended Hidilyn.

Also cheering Hidilyn via social media were Kylie Padilla, Mavy Legaspi, and Rodjun Cruz.

Kapuso stars Rayver Cruz, Pancho Magno, and Jillian Ward each congratulated Hidilyn for making the country proud.
