GMA Playlist artists reveal what music genre they would like to try someday
The launch of GMA Playlist label gives many Kapuso stars an opportunity to showcase their musical artistry.
GMA Playlist aims to appeal to the hearts of the millennials and GEN Z fans who are always on the lookout for music that is hip and fresh.
For the artists, the label looks to provide an environment where they can freely express their creativity with the help of skilled producers and songwriters all sharing that collaborative spirit.
Everyone is extremely talented and versatile, for sure.
But are there certain genres that the artists themselves consider as outside of their comfort zones? Something that they would love to try eventually with the help and support of GMA Playlist.
The Clash alumnus Anthony Rosaldo fancies singing in R&B style, a departure from his ballad and pop-rock leanings.
“Hirap ako kumulot,” he said, referring to the soulful vocal calisthenics R&B singers can easily pull off.
“Gusto ko 'yong ginagawa ng mga soulful singers na parang wala lang sa kanilang kumulot, e. Hindi ko pa kaya 'yon, it's out of my league. Siguro one day kaya kong tiyagain, kaya kong aralin 'yan.”
In contrast, singer-actress Mikee Quintos is drawn to the idea of singing heartfelt ballads like Anthony if given a chance.
“We [GMA Playlist] agree na hindi kami magsi-stick sa isang genre lang. Gusto naming mag-explore. Like in my case, nage-explore talaga kami ng iba't ibang genre kasi 'yon naman 'yong buong musical journey, you have to find your identity,” explained the Pepito Manaloto: Ang Unang Kuwento star.
At the moment, Mikee doesn't see herself doing straight-out ballads except if “sasamahan ako ni Anthony, baka makalusot.”
She added, “But I'm looking forward to exploring [other genres].”
Crystal Paras, meanwhile, is intrigued with the idea of singing soul and funk tunes.
“I'm so obsessed with Earth, Wind & Fire. But those are the kind of songs that I can't really sing - for fun lang, jamming,” confided Crystal.
“I'm used to doing pop and R&B pero music with horns, brass instruments, I want to try that one day.”
Denise Barbacena wants to eventually try R&B and reggae someday for a change.
“Ako kasi comfortable ako doing ballad songs,” said Denise.
“But I want to explore 'yong mga opposite of that, mga Rihanna, R&B, and reggae, kasi hindi ko masyadong ma-unleash 'yong ganung side ko. Sana it's not too late for that.”
Also wanting to challenge himself artistically is Kaloy Tingcungco.
“Current genre ko kasi are pop, R&B, and acoustic, mellow songs so medyo safe 'yong genre ko,” said Kaloy.
“Siguro I want to explore soulful music, something that would require belting higher notes,” added Kaloy, who also mentioned his desire to try rap someday.
Other artists under the GMA Playlist roster are Arra San Agustin, Faith Da Silva, Jeniffer Maravilla, Kim De Leon, Lexi Gonzales, Shayne Sava, Mark Herras, and Seb Pajarillo.
