The horror film In My Mother's Skin starring Kapuso actresses Jasmine Curtis-Smith and Beauty Gonzalez is set to premiere at the prestigious Sundance Film Festival on January 21.
The Sundance Film Festival is the largest, independent film festival in the United States and is held annually, taking place in January each year. The festival features sections for American and international films, dramatic and documentary films, feature films, short films, and a group of out-of-competition sections.
In My Mother's Skin will be included under the Midnight category, dedicated to films that might keep viewers awake at night, and is the only international film of the eight chosen to compete in the category.
“Perhaps the most notorious Sundance program, Midnight has long had a reputation for screening films guaranteed to provoke a reaction,” said the organizers.
They added, “Historically, tremendously diverse films that range across many genres and subject matters have occupied these screening slots.”
The film, meanwhile, is a Philippine-Singapore-Taiwan co-production with Epicmedia, Zhao Wei Films, Volos Films, and Clover Films, and follows the story of a girl who, while tending to her dying mother, gets acquainted with a flesh-eating fairy.
According to the creators, the film will be a fusion of physical body horror, suffocating tone, and psychological trauma while being about hope and overcoming physical and supernatural forces through human compassion.
In an Instagram post, Jasmine admitted that it was a “dream come true” for her that a movie that she stars in will be included in the Sundance Film Festival.
“From watching old Sundance entries in my high school bedroom to being cast in a film that will premiere at the film festival!!! It's been 12 years since I began professionally acting and this definitely takes the freaking highlight,” she said.
Malaysian-born Philippine-based filmmaker Bradley Liew of Epicmedia Productions, meanwhile, expressed in a statement how overjoyed they are to have their film not only because it was included in the festival, but also because it's the only foreign language film under the Midnight section.
“The section gave birth to cult classics and it's an honor to be part of the pack. This horror film, a dark fairytale, has very relevant and timely themes,” he said.
He added, “In My Mother's Skin is a true example of how coproductions within Southeast Asia can fully bloom given the right creatives, partners, and funding support.”
