Thea Astley in Once On This Island

Thea Astley is intent on finding out her real purpose in life.

Kapuso singer Thea Astley admitted that she's at the point in her life that she has to make a choice, sooner or later, on what she want to become in the future.

In an exclusive interview with GMANetwork.com at the rehearsal of Thea Astley's upcoming play Once On This Island, she admitted that she's already thinking if she would continue her studies or stay in the industry.

"I think TV and theater and music under one umbrella. I guess, it's really more of a choice between choosing a path that's more traditional. Kasi we all know that showbiz is not the most traditional path to take, especially in a Filipino household," she said.

"So, I guess, it's more on 'yung focusing on my studies kasi I'm studying right now. So, it's just a lot of things to balance. It's more about that, I guess.

"I'm really at the point where I'm working my way up, and I'm at an era of my career where I really need to fight for myself to get the jobs that I want, the roles that I want. I'm at that stage."

Living alone in the Philippines has also been a major factor to Thea's decision making. Thea's family has been living in Qatar for years now.

"My family is a big part of it because I know that my family wants the best for me. And, siyempre, if anyone's going to worry about me, it will be them first," she said. "I guess, that's where the confusion, for the lack of a better term, comes from, because I want to make sure that I do what is best for me, what I love while also achieving the dreams that my family has for me."

Earlier during the press interview, Thea was asked what were her prayers since her character in Once On This Island, Ti Moune, was saved by the gods in the flood.

"Recently, 'yung pinaka-central na dumadaan sa conversations ko with the higher power is just, since I'm entering my talagang adult era like para malayo na ako sa pagka-teenager, it's really question about my purpose," she admitted.

"And, if I am on the right track because I'm at a crossroad in my life where I really have to choose the path that I will take moving forward. It's mostly that, and just asking for guidance, for clarity, for peace."

Once on This Island is based on the 1985 novel My Love, My Love: or The Peasant Girl by Rosa Guy, which is a retelling of Hans Christian Anderson's classic fairy tale The Little Mermaid.

The 1994 West End production of this coming-of-age, one-act stage musical won the Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Musical in 1995. Its 2017 Broadway production won the Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical in 2018.

The 9Works Theatrical's Once on This Island will begin on September 6, 2024, and will run until September 29 at the RCBC Plaza in Makati City.
