Pinas Sarap host Kara David recently went on an exciting seafood food trip in Panglao, Bohol. She went to the Virgin Island, where locals make delicious dishes from their catch of the day for tourists to try.
There, she recognized some sea creatures she has encountered before, and some unique and interesting ones.
Among the familiar ones are the oyster, sugpo, talaba, toyum (sea urchin), swaki (another kind of sea urchin), and the abalone or kapinan. Kara said that the abalone is used as an ingredient in a very expensive Chinese soup.
Meanwhile, the sea creature that Kara saw for the first time is the Mantis Shrimp or Alupihang Dagat. According to the locals, it can strike with great force, and can possibly cut off a finger.
Kara also learned how to make Abalone Fried Rice, Stir-Fried Abalone with Chili and Garlic, and Sea Urchin Fried Rice, from the Vice President of the Virgin Island Vendors Association, Virgilio Clemen, Jr.
