Archie Alemania and Betong Sumaya share why Michael V. is a great mentor

By Aedrianne Acar

Aside from being a creative force behind GMA's highly successful comedy shows and winning countless awards here and abroad, Michael V. is often referred to by his co-stars not just as a leader but an exceptional mentor, too.

During the virtual media conference for Bubble Gang's 25th anniversary, Archie Alemania and Betong Sumaya listed some of the things they learned through the years working alongside Direk Bitoy.

For Archie, he observed that one of Michael V.'s traits that stands out the most is his professionalism.

“Sa akin po ang natutunan ko kay Kuya Bitoy, very professional. Wala kang angal na maririnig, he's a good leader and a mentor.”

He added, “Hindi siya boss, although boss namin siya sa Bubble Gang, pero he doesn't act that way. He acts like a leader na tuturuan ka, iga-guide ka. Hindi 'yung boss na, 'gawin mo 'to.'”

Meanwhile, Betong admitted to the entertainment press that he often forgets his lines when doing a sketch or gag with the great Michael V.

“To the point na 'yung linya mo kabisado mo. Pagdating mo sa kanya, hindi mo na kabisado. So, ibig sabihin kailangan talaga handa ka palagi sa linya mo, sa karakter mo, sa role mo.”

The comedian and TV host also stressed that by seeing Direk Bitoy in action, he learned that comedy should come naturally and commitment to playing your role is vital.

He explained, “Sabi nga ni Kuya Bitoy, 'pag nagpatawa ka kailangan natural lang, huwag mo ipakita na nagpapatawa ka, kasi comedy show na nga ito.

“You have to commit to the role and you have to play for truth at 'yung foundation mo talaga sa ganitong klase ng larangan, either comedy or ano mang larangan, kailangan marunong ka talagang umarte, good acting talaga.”

As the flagship gag show marks its 25th anniversary on Friday night (November 26), the program is also mourning the death of its beloved director Bert de Leon.
