Decoding Gen Z slang with Althea Ablan and Will Ashley

By Racquel Quieta

Slang words are often fun to use, but only if you truly understand their meaning. Otherwise, you might just come off as a trying-hard copycat.

Several slang words become trendy for every generation, and eventually, they become signs of the times or paint a picture of what society was like during a particular period.

The '90s gave birth to slang words such as aiight (alright), bling (jewelry), booyah (yay), and fly (hot/a hottie), while the early 2000s saw the rise in popularity of slang words such as chillax (relax), psyched (excited), my bad (my fault), and no biggie (no problem).

Now, with social media being the “in thing,” we have slang words such as selfie, dm (direct message), flex (show off), extra (over the top), and many more.

And if you're one of those old millennials or people from earlier generations who keep scratching their heads when they come across words on social media that they didn't even know exist, then you could definitely use a crash course on Gen Z lingo.

Who better to teach you than Kapuso Gen Z stars Althea Ablan and Will Ashley.

In a recent 'Mars Pa More' episode, the two Gen Z celebrities revealed the meaning of some slang words to hosts Iya Villania and Camilla Prats during the Talaga Ba Mars segment. Below are the said Gen Z words and their meanings.

Finsta

This is quite easy, since it's obviously a portmanteau of “fake” and “Instagram.” So, it means a fake Instagram account.

“Fake and Instagram, parang pinagsama po siya. and then pwedeng pang-stalk kay crush, ganyan. Alam mo naman ang mga Gen Zs.”

Althea also said that a finsta is usually private to conceal the true identity of its owner.

No cap

At first, this slang expression can be hard to comprehend, but its meaning is really simple.

“No cap” is basically another way of saying “for real” or confirming that something you just said is true or “legit” and not a joke.

Will emphasized, “Ang 'no cap' po kasi parang no lies, ganun. Walang halong biro.”

Snatched

The slang word “snatched” is used to compliment someone's fabulous outfit or look. Althea explained, “'Pag meron kang nakitang ganyan, good outfit, sabihin mo 'You look so snatched,' ganun.”

Yeet

“Yeet” is an expression that expresses excitement or being pleasantly surprised. It's pretty similar to the expression “wow.”

Will explained, “Kagaya po dun sa video, parang kunwari may sinabi po siyang maganda na ginawa ng isang tao, idudugtong po 'yung 'yeet.' Parang 'Ang galing, solid talaga 'yung ginawa niya.'”
