GMA Kapuso Foundation Report on Sendong Operations

As soon as reports of the Sendong-triggered flashfloods in Cagayan de Oro and Iligan reached the GMA Kapuso Foundation, movements were immediately planned for its Operation Bayanihan disaster relief program.Realizing the magnitude of the disaster that caused the loss of lives, displacement of people and destruction of properties, the GMAKF quickly set up a Command Post at the Capitol University Gym which served as venue for receiving of donations and repacking of supplies through its mobilized school community volunteers. By establishing a base in Cagayan de Oro, the GMAKF easily reached out to a massive number of affected families who immediately needed food, water, clothes, footwear, mats and blankets, and other basic supplies. Distribution of relief items to the evacuation sites and affected barangays was made possible through various individuals and groups that provided manpower, transport and other logistical support.
With Iligan suffering the same havoc experienced by CDO, the GMAKF also set up a Command Post at the Holy Cross Parish in Palao, Iligan. Soon after, a similar repacking base was established at the San Isidro Parish in Talay, Negros Oriental, where the count of affected families in Dumaguete City continued to increase. Having respective Command Posts in the most highly devastated areas enabled GMAKF to deliver the much needed help by individuals and families who were all in despair as tragedy struck a few days before Christmas. Bayanihan prevailed. The GMAKF served as conduit for donations by people from all walks of life, from all over the country and even overseas. Various groups from government and non-government entities, companies and communities, generously shared their resources and initiated support in GMAKF's relief operation efforts. To date, the GMA Kapuso Foundation has received cash donations amounting to Php 69,143,041.93; donations in kind with monetary value of Php 18,974,632.06 for a total of Php 88,117,673.99. (as of Jan 10)
A total of 186,695 individuals (44,607 families) in Dumaguete, Iligan, Cagayan de Oro and other parts of Misamis Oriental were served under GMAKF's Operation Bayanihan project. Relief assistance was complimented with feeding activities in selected areas where food was an urgent need. Separate medical missions were held in Cagayan de Oro, Iligan and Dumaguete, to address immediate health concerns. In partnership with the Philippine Medical Association, Rotary Club of Cebu, and government agencies like the DOH, DSWD, Philippine Army and PNP which pooled resources and mobilized volunteers to care for the disaster victims' well-being, a total of 5,712 individuals received medical consultations, basic medicines, dental services, minor surgeries, eye refraction with free eyeglasses, and psycho-social counselling.
The GMAKF has now moved from short-term relief assistance to long-term rehabilitation program. In particular, the construction of a housing project in a rural community in Iligan that will be relocated to a higher and safer ground is soon to be started in collaboration with the Local Government Unit and the local community. A water supply project is also being explored, as well as classroom rehabilitation under the Kapuso School Development project for identified communities in Dumaguete and Cagayan de Oro. With its mandate of 'Serbisyong Totoo' the GMA Kapuso Foundation has gone beyond relief assistance, to deliver a project with a lasting impact in the lives of the people and the community it will serve.
