Successful applicants will be teaching elementary and intermediate courses in Filipino

Filipino (Tagalog) language instructors looking to be part of a pioneering program at an Ivy League university need to get their CV's prepared as Yale University is looking for a Filipino language lector for its first Tagalog course.

In a post on the MacMillan Center for International and Area Studies at Yale website, the university called on lecturers who have “native or near-native fluency in Filipino (Tagalog)”, English proficiency, experience in teaching Filipino as a second language, an “M.A. or other advanced degree in Southeast Asian languages/literatures/linguistics, second language pedagogy, second language acquisition (SLA), applied linguistics, or other related field”, and a “demonstrated ability and enthusiasm for in-class teaching/acquisition”.

Successful applicants will be teaching elementary and intermediate courses in Filipino in four learning-skill areas: reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Applicants will also conduct additional language courses focusing on “literary, social, political, cultural and/or sociolinguistics topics related to Filipino (Tagalog) (as determined on the basis of the appointee's qualifications and expertise)”.

Aside from that, lecturers will also develop curriculum and pedagogic materials for Filipino and develop overseas language and study opportunities along Yale's Vietnamese and Indonesian language lectors.

Yale is just the latest Ivy League university to open a Filipino (Tagalog) language course. In September last year, Harvard University welcomed its first Filipina instructor in Lady Aileen Orsal.

Orsal is a Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant at the Center for Southeast Asian Studies at Northern Illinois University. Orsal is a Mass Communication graduate from the Cavite State University and also earned her Master's degree in Philippine Studies from the same university.

Cavite State University also put up a post congratulating Orsal.

Harvard University first announced its Filipino language courses back in March, citing Tagalog as the fourth most spoken language in the United States.
