Stephanie Hsu's audition tape for the highly-acclaimed film proved she understood the assignment.

One's 2022 wouldn't really be complete without having to watch directors Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert's film Everything Everywhere All at Once. The film starring Michelle Yeoh, Ke Huy Quan, Stephanie Hsu, and Jamie Lee Curtis gained a cult following from ordinary people up to Hollywood actors and K-pop idols because of its eye-opening and comforting storyline.

The sci-fi comedy-drama film is centric on the life of Chinese-American immigrant Evelyn Wang (Michelle Yeoh) who, while being audited by the IRS, discovers the existence of the multiverse and is forced to connect with versions of herself from different realms in order to defeat the powerful being that is Jobu Tupaki.

For those who still haven't watched the film, we're halting you from here on as there will be spoilers. So if you don't want to find out what happened through this article, close the tab now. But for those who know, Evelyn, later on, discovers that her daughter Joy (Stephanie Hsu) is also Jobu Tupaki.

Stephanie Hsu gave off an excellent performance and portrayed Joy and Jobu's characters so well to the point that the film made us cry every single rewatch. And this is because the Hollywood actress understood the assignment right from the very beginning.

International publication Deadline recently released Hsu's audition tape for the film and fans are left awestruck with how well she did. In an interview with Deadline, she shared, “The Daniels surprised me by showing this clip to an audience at the Hamptons Film Festival when I was receiving the Breakthrough Artist Award. I had never seen it! The first thing I said after I saw the clips was, 'Woah, I guess I really understood this movie!'”

“The Daniels and I did so much deep diving, developing the character and story once I was officially on board. It felt really special to witness that even in the early stages, before bells and whistles, there was something I really understood about the philosophical and emotional core of this film. Or perhaps that is also just something I wanted to bring to life on screen: the porosity of a villain/non-villain on the thin ice of hopelessness; a daughter at heart,” she further explains.

Hsu's portrayal of Joy and Jobu and chemistry with Yeoh really became the core of the film and helped evoked emotions in its viewers. She shared, “Our script has a strong soul that attracted like-minded souls to tell its story. Watching this clip was a grounding and full circle moment. It made me feel really proud of Joy/Jobu. Grateful that she found me.”
