Sapatero lives inside a pedicab with his two dogs amid quarantine

A 43-year-old man has been living inside a pedicab with his two dogs amid the community quarantine.

According to Mariz Umali's report for "24 Oras," Kimo Ranes had been using his pedicab to go around Manila in search of shoes to repair to earn money.

When the lockdown began, however, he could no longer ply his trade on the streets.

"Walang mga tao na nagpapatahi. Natatakot baka ma-covid daw," he said.

Kimo could not afford to rent an apartment with his meager income, so his pedicab doubles as his home. He has siblings in Metro Manila, but he doesn't want to be a burden to them.

So far, he has been able to survive with his savings from repairing shoes. He also received some rice and canned goods.

Despite the struggle, Kimo keeps a positive outlook and doesn't worry too much about the lockdown and the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).

It helps that he has his dogs, Chassie and Bruno, to help him cope with everything. They also watch over him even as he sleeps.

"Pag may tao na lumalapit sa 'yo, malalaman mo parating," he said. "O pag may mga balak sila na ano magising ka pag tumatahol 'yung aso eh. Makahanda ka, makaiwas ka."

Kimo also believes that God will protect him. He has three rosaries and a calendar with an image of Jesus and Mary inside his pedicab.

He did not get an education so he does not know the prayers, but he keeps his faith strong regardless.

"Hindi ako marunong gaano magdasal eh, hinahawakan ko lang, pangalan ni Jesus lang ganun," he said.
