Residents flock to Pritil Market a day before total lockdown in Tondo

 

Long lines formed early Saturday at a market in Manila a day before a hard lockdown is set to be imposed in Tondo.

Video taken by Super Radyo dzBB’s Jhomer Apresto showed residents patiently waiting in line outside Pritil Market in Tondo.

 

 

At a supermarket on Juan Luna Street, residents also formed a long line outside as they waited for their turn to be allowed inside. A guard checked shoppers' temperature and quarantine pass before letting them inside the supermarket, according to a report on 24 Oras News Alert by Vonne Aquino.

On Thursday, Manila Mayor Isko Moreno ordered a 48-hour hard lockdown of Tondo 1 District starting May 3 until May 5. 

Moreno signed Executive Order No. 22, shutting down the entire district from 5 a.m. of May 3 up to 5 a.m. of May 5, for the purposes of disease surveillance, verification or testing, and rapid risk assessment in relation to COVID-19.

The city government of Manila rushed to distribute food packs and P8,000 in cash aid to some 140,000 families before Tondo is locked down on Sunday, May 3. 

Only a few streets will be passable during the hard lockdown, and these will serve as checkpoints for those going in and out of the city.

Manila has recorded 696 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the city as of 5 p.m. on Friday, the Manila Public Information said. 

Of this number, 536 are active cases. Recoveries totalled 98 while the death toll is at 62.

As of Friday, the number of COVID-19 cases in the country reached 8,772. Of this number, 1,084 recovered while 579 died. —KG, GMA News
