Visayas, Mindanao grids under red, yellow alerts on August 31, 2026

Power interruptions are possible as power alerts have been raised over the Visayas and Mindanao grids on Monday, August 31, the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) said.

In an advisory, the Visayas grid will be placed under red alert between 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. Meanwhile, a yellow alert status will also be raised from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. and 10 p.m. to 11 p.m.

The NGCP said that the grid only has an available capacity of 2,119 megawatts (MW) despite a peak demand of 2,406 megawatts.

The grid operator cited the following factors that contributed to the red and yellow alert declarations:

• Increase in forecasted demand for Visayas by 112MW for 5 p.m.
• Limited power import from Mindanao (increase in forecasted demand for Mindanao by 157MW for 5 p.m.)

"9 plants are on forced outage on August 2026, 1 plant since July, 3 plants since June, 7 plants since May, 1 plant since March, 3 plants since 2025, 2 plants since 2024, 2 plants since 2023, and 1 plant since 2021, while 17 plants are running on derated capacities, for a total of 956.2MW unavailable to the grid," the NGCP said.

Mindanao grid

A yellow alert status, meanwhile, will be hoisted over the Mindanao grid from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. It was an hour earlier than the 6 p.m. stated in the initial advisory.

The grid currently has an available capacity of 2,566 MW against a peak demand of 2,3896 MW.

The NGCP said the hoisting of a yellow alert over the Mindanao grid is due to the increase in forecasted demand for Mindanao by 106MW for 6 p.m.

There were also 19 plants on forced outage this month, NGCP said.

These are aside from the four plants on forced outage since July, one plant since June, two plants since January, one plant since 2025, and one plant since 2024.

Five plants meanwhile are running on derated capacities, for a total of 755.1 MW unavailable to the grid, NGCP said.

A red alert status is issued when power supply is insufficient to meet consumer demand and the transmission grid’s regulating requirement.

Meanwhile, a yellow alert is issued when the operating margin is insufficient to meet the transmission grid’s contingency requirement. —KG/AOL, GMA News
