Mindanao grid on yellow alert on Tuesday, Sept. 1, 2026

The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines on Tuesday said the Mindanao grid will be placed on yellow alert from 1 to 8 p.m. on September 1.

The grid's available capacity is 2,555 MW but peak demand is estimated to be 2,450 MW, the NGCP said.

Some plants are also on forced outage, as follows:

• 20 plants in August 2026
• 4 plants since July
• 1 plant since June
• 2 plants since January
• 1 plant since 2025
• 1 plant since 2024

Meanwhile, six plants are running on derated capacities.

These have resulted in 766.3 MW being unavailable to the grid, NGCP said.

The unavailability of Mindanao's large coal plants GNPK 2 and recent force outages of TSI 2 on August 29 and GNPK 1 on August 30 contributed to the declaration of the yellow alert, it added.

"A yellow alert is issued when the operating margin is insufficient to meet the transmission grid’s contingency requirement," the NGCP said. —KG, GMA News
