A seven-year-old Belgian Malinois named Yugo in Panabo City, Davao del Norte died a hero to his family after he passed away protecting his home from a venomous cobra.
Parts of the snake were found near Yugo's body.
Yugo's fur parent, Cindy Sandigan, said no one was home when the incident happened. She and her husband accompanied their child at a training in Tagum City at that time. It was when they returned home when the child noticed Yugo lying motionless on the ground.
"By the time nga pag-abot namo dinhi, wala pa jud mi idea nga kana ang nahitabo... akong anak nag-ingon nga ma, wala lagi nag-move si Yugo... mao to ni-singgit ko sa akoang bana, Beb, flashlighty sa bi nganong dili mo lihok si Yugo. Pag-flashlight sa akong bana, didto nakita ang mga tad tad na mga body part sa bitin,” Sandigan said.
She said it was the third time that Yugo protected their family from snakes.
Sandigan said what pained them the most is knowing that Yugo chose to sacrifice his life for his home, for his family.
"Ang pinaka-painful lang jud is kana bitawng namatay siya in a way nga, kana bitawng ma-feel nimo nga sa kadugay sa imo pa jung last breath gi-choose nga i-take good care mi,” she added.
Despite the grief, the family tries to smile at the fact that Yugo's partner, Ally, is expecting pups.
Sandigan said Yugo was a member of their family.
"Pag-once nga naa kay alaga, mapa aso man o pusa, kinahanglan gyud nimo siya nga, e need to treat them as part of the family,” Sandigan said.
