A decade may have passed, but for Glenn Muñoz Lopez, memories of his close encounter with Pope Francis remain vivid — from a missed photo opportunity to a powerful blessing that changed his life.
Out of 4,000 applicants, Lopez was the only Dagupan native selected as one of 23 official photographers for the Pope’s 2015 visit to the Philippines.
“I was so starstruck. Hindi ko namalayan na photographer pala ako. Hindi ko siya nakunan. Paglagpas niya, dun ko na-realize na photographer pala ako,” Lopez said.
One of his photos — now displayed at the altar of the St. John the Evangelist Cathedral — was featured in a commemorative book about the Pope’s visit.
But getting the perfect shot wasn’t easy.
Often, Pope Francis would face crowds where Lopez wasn’t positioned. But when he found the perfect timing, Lopez made his move.
“I have no choice. Sumigaw talaga ako. Sabi ko, ‘Papa Francisco!’ Narinig niya yung boses ko. Lumingon siya. Nagka-eye-to-eye kami,” he said.
Lopez saw the Pope nine times during his Philippine visit. He said each moment felt holy — like a wave of positive energy. He also shared one moving encounter when he was stopped from taking a photo, only to be blessed by the Pope himself.
“Sabi niya, ‘No, stop! No!’ [kasi] hinila ako ng ground commander. Pagtapat niya, he made a sign of the cross sa akin, blessing me,” Lopez shared.
Now serving in the Church full-time, Lopez said the Pope’s humility became his inspiration.
“Naging inspiration ko siya serving the Church with all dedication and devotion. Para mas mangibabaw sa akin yung pagsisilbi sa simbahan with all humility,” he said.
As the world mourns the Pope’s passing, Lopez keeps his memories close, not just in photos, but in faith and service.
