The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) - 7 arrested two men in Cebu City for allegedly tampering with power meters to make it appear that a household has lower electricity consumption.
Through this modus, the suspects would allegedly ask money from that household.
The suspects also allegedly introduced themselves as employees of the Visayan Electric Company (VECO), something that VECO denied explicitly.
VECO said they received several reports about the modus from consumers, which was why they sought the help of the National Bureau of Investigation.
“We appreciate the help of NBI-CEVRO kay paspas gyud kaayo sila nakatabang sa amoa. The moment we reported it, they coordinated with us and planned for the entrapment operation,” said VECO’s legal counsel, Atty. Christian Luigi Diez.
VECO said tampering with the meter is dangerous because it could cause problems in the electric line and may even start a fire.
One of the two suspects was arrested in the entrapment operation on B. Rodriguez Street in Cebu City. His cohort was arrested in a subsequent operation and was even caught allegedly in possession of illegal drugs.
“This acts violate Republic Act 7832 also known as the Anti-Electricity and Electric Transmission Lines/Materials Pilferage Act of 1994,” said Maria Contessa Lastimosa, Special Investigator of NBI-7.
VECO said it will continue to go after those who will use its name for illegal activities.
It urged the public to report immediately to the company or to authorities anyone who may adopt the same modus.
