A fire razed approximately two hectares of a sugarcane plantation and the grass at a vacant lot along the highway in Barangay Villarey, Piat, Cagayan.
The incident was captured on video by the Cagayan Electric Cooperative Incorporated.
According to SFO3 Elimar Singun of the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) - Piat, who served as the ground commander, it is possible that farmers put the plantation on fire as part of customary preparation practices following harvest.
However, the fire spread to the nearby grasslands.
The fire was extinguished after nearly two hours.
No injuries were reported, and there was no damage to CAGELCO I’s electrical wires.
The BFP continues to advise against burning, especially during hot weather.
