Part of a newly constructed riprap in Barangay Salvacion, Bula, Camarines Sur, has collapsed as recent rains caused soil erosion.
The construction of the 300-meter riprap began in April 2024.
The project, aimed at preventing soil erosion, has already shown signs of deterioration, with sections of the riprap collapsing.
Barangay officials suspect that the recent rains have caused the soil to erode, leading to the instability of the riprap.
Residents have expressed concerns about the lack of adequate protection if water levels continue to rise.
“Pirmi na pong mahahandal kaiyan ta, halimbawa mag-bagyo digdi, talaga malaog an tubig,” Walter Del Socorro, a resident, said.
The contractor is working to address the damaged sections of the riprap and is focused on improving the situation.
Another major concern raised by residents is the safety of the stairway on the riprap, which is not properly proportioned and poses a danger, especially to children.
“Makatakuton ta bulusok, delikado po lalo sa mga aki,” Michelle Globo, another resident, said.
The Barangay Council has advised residents to avoid the area due to visible cracks in the riprap.
The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) 5th District Engineering Office is overseeing the project and has identified approximately 20 meters of riprap that have collapsed and require urgent repair.
Repair work is now ongoing, with efforts focused on stabilizing the affected sections and completing the project as soon as possible.
