A 21-year-old college graduate was elected the new mayor of Rizal, Cagayan just weeks after her father was shot dead during the campaign.

Mayor-elect Jamila Ruma earned 5,134 votes in the recent elections, stepping into politics after the tragic death of her father, former Mayor Atty. Joel Ruma, who was gunned down during a campaign event in a barangay on April 23.

Her mother, Brenda Ruma, also secured a second term as vice mayor.

Jamila is a graduate of Development Studies from De La Salle University Manila and was a consistent Dean’s Lister.

In a Facebook post, the young mayor thanked the people of Rizal for their trust and support, promising to continue what her father had started.
