A man who was thrown out of a roadside shop in Baguio City for allegedly harassing a female worker returned before dawn on Monday, April 13, 2026, and hurled an improvised explosive device into the establishment, injuring 14 people.
CCTV footage released by authorities showed the suspect lighting an object beside parked vehicles before tossing it toward the shop in Barangay Magsaysay at around 4 a.m., causing an explosion.
Among those wounded were customers inside the store and commuters waiting nearby. All victims were rushed to hospitals for treatment.
Police said the incident stemmed from an earlier confrontation after the suspect allegedly harassed a female employee. The woman reportedly slapped him, while a bystander also intervened and punched him.
“Yung suspek, mayroon siyang binastos na isang babae, which, ‘yun nga, sinampal siya nung isang babae. May tumulong din na isang bystander na nanuntok,” PMaj. Marcy Grace Marron, spokesperson of the Baguio City Police Office, said.
After the altercation, the man went home but later returned carrying an explosive device, which he threw into the shop.
The suspect, a 32-year-old miner from Itogon, Benguet, was arrested shortly after the blast and is now in police custody. Authorities said he was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the attack.
Five of the injured have since been discharged, while nine others remain under medical observation.
Police described the blast as an isolated case but said the investigation is ongoing.
“This is the first time naman na may ganiyang insidente. We encourage the public na ‘pag may mga kahina-hinalang mga tao na nakikita nila, ipagbigay-alam na lang po sa mga kapulisan,” Marron said.
