Two people died while more than 40 others were injured in separate road accidents in Misamis Occidental and Cagayan de Oro City on Monday, April 13, 2026.
In Misamis Occidental, an elderly woman died while at least 48 others sustained injuries after the bus they were riding fell on its side in Oroquieta City shortly before midday on Monday.
Based on investigation, the bus was traveling from Dipolog City to Cagayan de Oro City when it fell on its side while navigating a curve on the road.
“Kaning driver sa bus nag-maneuver sa dalan nga likuon kayo ug didto sa pagmaneobra sa iyang manibela. Instead nga iya kini ma-maneobra og insakto natumba na hinuon ang maong bus,” Police Regional Office-Northern Mindanao (PRO-10) Spokesperson, Major Joann Navarro, said.
More than 20 passengers are receiving treatment at the hospital, as of this writing, while others have already been discharged.
The bus company has reportedly extended initial financial assistance to the victims.
“Duna sila’y mga amicable settlement but still atong kapulisan andam gihapon sa mga dokumento nga gikinahanglan kung makahuna-huna kining mga pasahero nga mupasaka og kaso,” Navarro added.
CDO INCIDENT
Meanwhile, a 53-year-old man did not reach the hospital alive after he was hit by a freezer van in Barangay Patag, Cagayan de Oro City.
Police said the victim allegedly crossed the street suddenly, leaving the van driver unable to avoid the collision.
The van driver claimed that the victim was using a cellphone while crossing the street, which may be reason he did not see the vehicle coming his way.
“Mao lagi sa iya ra pud nga alleged nga katung pedestrian wala na nagbantay sa dalan kung aduna ba’y mga sakyanan kay matod pa sa drayber nga nag-cellphone kuno naa’y katawag nagkuha sa iyang bag naa’y katawag,” Corporal Bryan Cuhit, investigator from the Traffic Enforcement Unit of the Cagayan de Oro City Police Office (COCPO), said.
Authorities did not take the driver into custody after both parties reportedly reached an agreement.
“Sa mga pedestrian magbantay-bantay kita kanunay magtan-aw ta perminti kung aduna ba sakyanan diha nga nagdagan,” Cuhit added.
