At least 12 houses were razed to the ground after a fire hit a residential area in Barangay Agusan, Cagayan de Oro City shortly before midday on Friday, April 24, 2026.

According to residents, the fire spread quickly due to strong winds.

“Ang hangin man gud paingon diri nadamay ang tabok na balay mao to ni katay paingon diri kani man gud diri sa likod puro man gud mga kahoy ug mga plastic,” a resident affected, Bon Villena, said.

The fire was raised to third alarm.

It was reportedly difficult for firefighters and for firetrucks to reach the area due to narrow roads.

Because of this, residents were forced to cut the water line from the Cagayan de Oro Water District (COWD) and lined up to transfer buckets of water to the fire trucks.

Based on initial investigation, the damage to property was estimated at P1 million.

Investigators are looking into all possible angles but initial report points to the fire starting possibly at the kitchen of one of the houses.

“Usa na sa anggulo nga among tutukan kay dili ma man mi mag-focus sa usa lang ka angle tanan man atong tutukan. Ang gireport is sa kitchen nagsugod ang kalayo,” Cagayan de Oro City Fire District Chief Admin, Fire Inspector Mary Salga, said.

The residents affected are taking shelter temporarily at the barangay covered court.
