A 13-year-old boy died and seven other passengers were injured after a tricycle, pickup truck, and SUV figured in a collision along De Venecia Highway Extension in Dagupan City, police said.

Videos from the scene showed residents and motorists rushing to lift a wrecked tricycle to free trapped passengers as cries and shouting filled the highway.

Police said the accident happened when the tricycle, carrying eight passengers, was traveling downhill from Pantal toward Lucao and struck the rear of a pickup truck coming from the town proper.

“Yung sa tricycle, pababa po siya ng Pantal papunta Lucao, then yung isa namang vehicle… galing po siya ng bayan… Yung tricycle nabunggo niya yung likod ng pick up,” Police Captain Pete Oliver Soriano, chief of Dagupan City Police Station 1, said.

The impact caused the tricycle to spin and roll over into the opposite lane, where it was then hit by a passing SUV.

The 13-year-old passenger became pinned under the SUV and later died. Seven other passengers of the tricycle were injured.

“Bale punong-puno yung tricycle. Bale walo yung karga ng tricycle kaya hindi po agad kumagat yung preno,” Soriano said.

Police said two of the seven injured passengers have already been discharged from the hospital.

Authorities added that the three parties involved in the crash have already reached an agreement and no case has been filed.

GMA Regional TV One North Central Luzon is still trying to get statements from those involved, including relatives of the victim, as of press time.
