Police have identified at least two persons of interest in the robbery of a pawnshop in Calinog, Iloilo on April 27, 2026.
The suspects have taken away cash and jewelry worth an estimated P3 million.
“Maaaring nasa dalawa o tatlo pa, basta hindi bababa sa dalawang tao. Maaaring tumagal ng mga dalawang araw bago nila napasok ang establisemento,” said Maj. Myles Dieron, chief of the Calinog Municipal Police Station.
Police said it may have taken the suspects two days to work their way 350 meters into the drainage from the river to the bottom of the structure where the pawnshop is located and where they drilled a hole to enter the shop through the floor.
Calinog Mayor Francisco Calvo said the so-called “Termite Gang” may be behind the robbery.
“Hindi yan magagawa ng taga-Calinog. Kaso baka may kasama lang silang taga-Calinog na kagrupo nila,” the mayor said.
But the police said they cannot say just yet that the gang is responsible. The police noted, however, that the manner the robbery was carried out resembled that of the work of the Termite Gang.
“Hindi pa natin ma-consider na gawa ng termite gang dahil yun nga, wala pa tayong identity ng mga suspect natin. Ngunit ang the way na pagpasok, halos kapareho lang,” Dieron said.
