A progressive labor group has condemned what it described as a “brutal demolition” at the Bankerohan Public Market in Davao City that left several individuals injured.
In a statement, the Kilusang Mayo Uno-Southern Mindanao (KMU-SMR) said the operation carried out by the local government against vendors on April 29, 2026, was violent and inhumane.
“The clash that erupted between the demolition team and the vendors is not merely an isolated incident of disorder — it is a direct consequence of governance that is callous, irresponsible, and utterly devoid of compassion for the poor,” KMU-SMR said.
The group called on the local government to stop all demolition operations targeting market vendors without prior consultation, relocation, or alternative livelihood spaces.
“The vendors of Bankerohan are not criminals. They are working men and women — mothers, fathers, and breadwinners — earning an honest living to feed their families. They dutifully pay their arkabala — their market fees and stall rent — every single day,” KMU-SMR said.
“We demand accountability for the actions of the demolition team and just compensation for all those who suffered harm and displacement on April 29,” it added.
It can be recalled that several individuals were injured after vendors and members of the demolition team of the city’s Ancillary Services Unit (ASU) figured in a confrontation during clearing operations, which escalated into a physical clash.
LGU STATEMENT
In a statement, the Davao City government said the KMU-SMR’s view was one-sided and failed to consider the impact of illegal vending on public order.
The local government emphasized that while livelihood is important, regulations must be enforced to maintain fairness and discipline.
It added that vendors complying with city ordinances also have rights that must be protected.
The city government and the Davao City Police Office (DCPO) continue to investigate the incident and vowed to implement necessary actions based on verified findings.
The local government also maintained that road clearing operations will continue to uphold public safety and ensure fairness for all.
