A 30-year-old man died while two elderly women remain missing, as of this writing, after they were buried when a portion of a sanitary landfill in Barangay New Carmen, Tugbok District, Davao City collapsed afternoon on Wednesday, May 20, 2026.

Residents reportedly noticed that the back portion of the sanitary landfill gave in around 1 p.m.

As a result, tons of garbage slid down toward houses built in the lower area.

Due to the volume of waste, several houses were reportedly buried and swept away, including the homes of two elderly women who remain missing, as of this writing.

Authorities may use heavy equipment to retrieve the bodies of the missing individuals.

Two other individuals also sustained injuries and are currently receiving treatment at a hospital.

“Basi sa nakakita kalit lang gyud daw nga nidahili ang basura tungod kay pila ka adlaw man gud ang ulan bug-at ang basuran mao to kaganina nilihok,” Barangay New Carmen Chairman Jerry Siballos, said.
