As more people hit the sea due to the hot weather, the local government of Argao in southern Cebu has warned residents and visitors of a jellyfish bloom in beaches in the town.
Kevinvan Verzosa, a resident, said they started noticing the increasing number of thimble jellyfish on Tuesday, May 19, 2026.
In fact, several beachgoers have reportedly been stung, mostly children who are taking advantage of the school break to swim at sea, as well as visitors.
The town’s Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) has warned the public to be careful when at sea.
Charlie Moso, MDRRMO staff member, advised that those who would really want to take a dip at sea wear protective clothing.
“Avoid na lang gyud ta, ma’am, para di na katol-katol… di na makoanan ug allergies. If ever ganahan sila mosawom or ganahan sila maligo og dagat nga naay jellyfish, mag-wear na lang ta og protective PPEs or mag-jacket pa gyud if ganahan sila,” he said.
Experts said it is best to go to the hospital when stung by jellyfish but the following remedies may be applied while waiting for help:
- Pour vinegar on the area affected for one minute
- Use a tweezer to pull the stingers but don't remove them right away
- Pour lukewarm water on the area affected
- Pour water if hits the eyes
- Do not touch or put any pressure on the stingers and do not pour alcohol on the area
