The local government of Samal Island has put preparations in place for the looming rainy season after the state weather bureau PAGASA declared the start of the Habagat season over the weekend.

In Barangay Villarica, Babak District, residents and officials have strengthened weekly cleanup drives, focusing on drainage canals to prevent flooding.

“Naa na gyud mi regular nga cleanup weekly sa barangay labi na gyud sa mga drainage, kanal. Istrikto gyud namo gina-implementar ang waste segregation labaw na sa dili malata ginapadayon namo na aron maiwasan ang pagbaha sa among barangay,” Barangay Villarica Councilman Kenneth Tracy David said.

The Habagat season is expected to bring frequent rains and strong winds, particularly in the western part of the country.

The local government has warned residents, especially those living near the shore, of rough seas and strong waves.

“Gina-monitor namo ang pagsaka sa tubig. Sa tan-aw namo gasaka ang tubig unya kusog na ang balod ginawatag namo, nagpaadto dayon mig response team mo-assist ug monitor sa atong kabaybayonan,” Mayor Lemuel Reyes said.

Meanwhile, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) also intensified its Oplan Kontra Baha, where clearing and dredging operations and widening of waterways are strengthened.
