The Office of Civil Defense (OCD) Region 1 is monitoring closely a series of earthquakes recorded off the coast of Bolinao, Pangasinan, even as authorities said there is no tsunami threat and most of the tremors have been too weak to be felt on land.

From May 22 to June 3, 2026, more than 90 earthquakes were recorded near the municipality, prompting continued monitoring by disaster officials and seismologists.

According to the OCD, the seismic activity appears to be occurring near the Manila Trench, a major offshore fault zone known for generating earthquakes.

“Ito ay talaga nating mino-monitor, especially kung mapapansin natin doon sa plotting ng DOST-PHIVOLCS, sa may part siya ng Manila Trench at ’yung mga earthquake ay parang tuloy-tuloy siya,” said Adreanne Pagsolingan, public information officer of OCD Region 1.

Despite the frequency of the tremors, authorities said the earthquakes have been weak, relatively, and have not been felt in Bolinao or communities nearby.

The OCD also assured residents that there is no indication of a tsunami threat from the recorded seismic activity.

“For information, ’yung mga mahihina na earthquakes sa karagatan ay most definitely hindi siya makapag-trigger ng tsunami. So isang malaki o malakas na earthquake sa karagatan, ’yun ang mag-trigger ng tsunami,” Pagsolingan said.

As a precaution, OCD Region 1 has instructed local government units and barangays across the region to review and update their earthquake contingency plans and preparations for possible secondary hazards.

In Barangay Guiguilonen in Mangaldan, Pangasinan, officials have intensified disaster preparedness efforts through regular earthquake drills and public information campaigns.

The barangay conducts earthquake drills at least once a month at the barangay hall and continues to educate residents on proper safety measures during seismic events.

“Sinasabihan namin ang mga residente na mag-ingat at dapat kalmado lang kapag may lindol at regular ang earthquake drill namin,” Barangay Chairman Mark Caida said.

Authorities urged the public to remain vigilant, stay informed through official advisories, and participate in community preparedness activities as monitoring of the offshore earthquakes continues.
