Amid a series of aftershocks from the magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck Sarangani Province on June 8, 2026, several areas were also hit by flooding over the weekend.

After a magnitude 5.3 aftershock on Saturday, June 13, 2026, several barangays in Maasim town experienced heavy rains.

In Barangay Kanalo, many motorists were stranded after strong river currents caused scouring and erosion on the abutment protection of a bridge.

Because of this, the bridge approach was damaged, and a massive hole was seen on the bridge.

According to the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), the soil beneath that section has been washed away, leaving part of the bridge hanging.

As a temporary measure, DPWH personnel reportedly filled the area with soil to make it passable again since many motorists were stranded at that time.

“Ang taas, ang lalim niya, mga 10 feet. Doon sa left side mga 10 feet din ang lapad tapos wala nang lupa sa ilalim, ito nalang ibabaw ang natira,” a foreman, Emelito Ilo, said.

Residents said they are still struggling to recover from the damage and trauma caused by the earthquake when they were confronted by flooding, once again.

“Kapag lumilindol, natu-trauma ‘yung mga bata… kahit ako kahapon na-trauma. Sabi ko lumindol sa umaga tapos baha na naman sa hapon. Sabi ko sa aking mga anak, eto na naman tayo, evacuate na naman tayo,” a resident, Noraida Usman, said.

In Barangay Nomoh, residents risked their lives crossing a damaged hanging bridge as strong currents rushed through the creek.

The barangay has immediately enforced a forced evacuation since the area has been declared prone to landslides and flash floods.

“Mahirap talaga kasi ang hanging bridge is sira. Tapos mga bata pa at may bagong panganak pa. So, risky talaga. Pahirapan talaga ang rescue naming,” a rescuer, Kaypee Tugin, said.

The residents affected were moved to the barangay hall, which served as an evacuation center.

“Ang pinaka-priority gyud namo nga problema diri sa Brgy. Nomoh, number 1, kay tubig kay amoang mga tubo, naanod na. Unya ang pagkaon sa mga tao nako, mga bakwit gikan sa Purok 5,” Barangay Nomoh Chairman Erwin Tabalao, said.

OTHER BARANGAYS

Meanwhile, Barangay Lumasal was also submerged in floodwaters due to the rapid rise of the water level in the creek.

Floodwaters reportedly entered several houses in the area.

As the floodwaters subsided, thick mud was left inside homes along with wet belongings soaked by the flood. Residents immediately began cleaning their houses.

“Syempre bale kaba, syempre nanghihinayang din kasi may nga gamit kami, may mga ref, tv at laptop nasira, lahat nasira. Wala kaming magawa kung ganyan talaga,” a resident affected, Raner Samson, said.

Based on initial data, around 200 families were affected in Barangay Lumasal. Most of them are now staying in schools that have been turned as evacuation centers.

In Kiamba town, several houses in Purok 5, Lower Maglangit that were built beside a creek are now left hanging after the soil underneath was eroded by flooding.

Parts of some houses were damaged and washed away, leaving only parts of the structures remaining.

The residents affected appeal for assistance from government.
