At least 15 families were displaced by a fire in Barangay Calumpang, General Santos City on Tuesday, June 30, 2026.
The fire broke out in Purok Lanoy around 4 p.m. and was declared fire out after nearly an hour.
Authorities said around 14 houses were razed to the ground.
“Nakaligtas me sa linog pero sa sunog wala nakaligtas,” a resident affected, Dario Pungcol, said.
Another resident claimed that the fire started in a house where a child reportedly left a stove unattended with a pan of cooking oil on it.
The child allegedly poured water onto the oil upon returning, which may have triggered the fire.
“Nabiyaan daw, naay kayo ang mantika, murag nagpalit pag itlog,” another resident, Emilie Cabanacan, said.
However, the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) is still investigating the incident, including the cost of damage caused by the fire.
“Dili pa nato ma-confirm karon, ug kana siya mao ang i-prove unsay gyud ang tinuod nga hinungdan,” BFP Calumpang Spokesperson, SFO2 Nituel Bacate, said.
The families affected are taking shelter temporarily at the barangay covered court and were given immediate assistance by the local government.
“Bisag tagaan mi gamay tabang nga makatukod og payag,” Cabanacan added.
The BFP also urged the public to invest in fire extinguishers and practice the “bayanihan” spirit through a bucket relay system to help contain fires quickly.
