A coastal road in Santa, Ilocos Sur has been closed to traffic after strong waves caused part of it to collapse, raising concerns among residents living near the shoreline.
Around 50 meters of the road along the coast in Barangay Quezon gave way after the ground beneath it eroded during #IndayPH, according to local officials.
Barangay Chairman Benedicto Cardenas said the problem began after Typhoon Nando damaged the seawall beside the road in September 2025. Without the seawall's protection, continuous wave action gradually weakened the area until the road finally collapsed.
The damaged road has been closed and is no longer passable to residents while authorities assess the situation.
Cardenas said the barangay has already reported the damage to concerned government agencies, which have started coordinating a response.
Temporary measures, including the installation of gabion baskets and boulders, are now being prepared to prevent further erosion while a permanent solution is being planned.
Cardenas said the municipal government, the Ilocos Sur Provincial Engineering Office, the Department of Public Works and Highways' Second District Engineering Office, and the mayor of Santa have agreed to share resources for the emergency works.
Authorities have yet to announce when the damaged road will reopen, as efforts continue to stabilize the area and prevent further collapse.
