Authorities seized mining equipment worth around P9.5 million in an anti-illegal mining operation in Barangay Awa, Prosperidad, Agusan del Sur evening on Thursday, July 16, 2026.
The operation was carried out by personnel from the Police Regional Office-Caraga (PRO-13, in coordination with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), the Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) Bayugan, and the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) after receiving information about the alleged illegal mining activities in the area.
When the operating team arrived, indications of illegal mining were observed. However, no one was around, as authorities believe the suspects had fled before the team arrived.
Confiscated during the operation were two backhoes, three gasoline-powered water pump engines, a sluice box, a battery, and other equipment believed to have been used in illegal mining activities.
The seized items were turned over to the DENR-CENRO.
“This successful operation demonstrates our unwavering commitment to protect our environment and communities from the destructive impact of illegal mining. With unity and determination, we will continue to intensify our efforts to safeguard the future of our youth and ensure accountability against violators,” Prosperidad Municipal Police Station Chief, Major Jerry Fernandez, said.
PNP Chief, Police General Jose Melencio C. Nartatez Jr., also commended the operating teams for the successful operation.
"Ang kalikasan ay yaman ng bawat Pilipino. Hindi tayo titigil sa pagpapatupad ng batas laban sa mga gawaing sumisira sa ating likas na yaman. Patuloy nating paiigtingin ang koordinasyon sa ating partner agencies para mapanagot ang mga lumalabag at maprotektahan ang kapakanan ng ating mga komunidad," Nartatez said.
Nartatez urged the public to report suspected illegal mining activities and other environment violations to authorities.
