A man allegedly drowned when he jumped into the sea in Barangay Matina Aplaya, Davao City on Thursday, July 16, 2026.
According to the Davao City Police Office (DCPO), a witness reportedly saw the victim dive into the sea despite being warned about the strong current and waves.
Responders administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on the victim as a dragon boat team assisted in the rescue and transported him back to shore.
He was rushed to the Southern Philippines Medical Center (SPMC) where he was declared dead.
“According sa witness, duna siya’y nakita nga misalom diretso sa dagat. Giingnan pa gani siya nga kusog ang sulog ug balod pero gi-ignore sa biktima. Gidala sa SPMC, however, pag-abot didto, gi-declare siya as dead,” DCPO Spokesperson, Major Ma. Teresita Gaspan, said.
Authorities said the man was on his cellphone before he jumped into the sea.
Investigation into the incident continues..
“Hangtod karon, wala pa ta kakuha og identity, considering wala’y nakuha sa iya nga document. Sa pagkakaron, ongoing pa ang investigation,” Gaspan added.
