Authorities rescued up to 62 people after the motorboat they were riding reportedly encountered engine trouble while navigating the waters off Bongao, Tawi-Tawi on Monday, July 27, 2026.

Personnel of the Coast Guard Sub-Station (CGSS) Bongao deployed a search and rescue team upon receiving a report about the vessel.

The team located the boat, eventually, and towed it to the Port of Bongao.

By evening, the 52 passengers and 10 crew members were rescued safely.

“All 62 persons on board were reported to be in good physical condition,” the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) said.

Authorities said the boat was bound for Mapun from Bongao when the incident happened.

“The successful operation reflects the PCG's unwavering commitment to its Intensified Community Assistance, Awareness, Response, and Enforcement (iCARE) program by delivering prompt, responsive, and people-centered maritime services that uphold the safety and welfare of every Filipino,” PCG added.
