Nearly 50 grave markers at a Roman Catholic cemetery in Barangay Poblacion Oeste in Dagupan City were found damaged.

Most of the grave markers that were vandalized are those in apartment-type niches.

The barangay council, the Philippine National Police, and church officials have launched an investigation, but no suspects have been identified, as of this writing.

"Chineck din natin yung CCTV kung saan dumaan yung nagsira ng lapida. So far, wala naman kaming makita. Pumunta din dito ang PNP at nagkaroon ng investigation, at caretaker nila, puros walang alam,” Barangay Chairman Macmac Gutierrez said.

A newly built restroom inside the cemetery was also vandalized.

Gutierrez said it was possible that more than one person carried out the damage.

"Kasi ang sinasabi, pinagtripan daw. Hindi ko alam kung sinasadya o may galit, hindi natin alam. Blangko pa rin naman tayo. Hindi naman tayo puwedeng magbintang,” he said.

GMA Regional TV One North Central Luzon sought a statement from church officials regarding the incident and are yet to respond, as of posting.

According to a parish employee, the church is prepared to shoulder the cost of repairing the damaged grave markers.

The parish has also assigned additional caretakers to watch over the cemetery. The barangay will install a CCTV camera at the cemetery entrance, while the church will add more cameras inside the cemetery to strengthen security.
