Several structures obstructing sidewalks were dismantled while some items were confiscated during the local government’s intensified road clearing operations in Cagayan de Oro City.

The operation started around Cogon Public Market, including JR Borja Avenue in front of the market, where small stalls used by watch repair vendors were inspected.

The vendors were also given time to clean up and remove their belongings to avoid confiscation.

The team then proceeded to Capt. Vicente Roa and Hayes Streets, where flower and fruit vendors were flagged for putting up makeshift tents.

Water dispensing stations beside the barangay hall were also seized.

The team later reached Osmeña Street, where sidewalk vendors were inspected.

Habal-habal drivers around Cogon were also checked for permits. Upon inspection, some were found to have expired permits and were instructed to renew them with the local government.

Motorcycles and vehicles parked illegally along the road were issued tickets.

The team also inspected the stalls of vendors at Cogon Market and found that many had exceeded their designated spaces.

“Mga bisa’g-unsa para lang makapalit ko og tambal sige ko og balik-balik sa ospital. Wala pa kaabot kay tua pa sa balay ang akong anak dili lang gyud ko musupak, sir. Permi man ko (musubay) pasayloa lang ko,” a vendor said.

However, the team explained its purpose to the vendor and gave her time to organize and move the belongings inside her stall.

The team said some vendors allegedly refused to follow the rules, with others claiming that they pay certain individuals to be allowed to sell along the roadside despite the prohibition.

“Nakita nako actual ang mga tawo gyud diri mga gahi, daghan excuses muna gihangyo nako nga magtinabanga unta ta kay puro raman ta mga taga-cagayan de oro. Dili lang unta ta magmagahi kay kana lagi taking advantage over the others,” road clearing team co-chairman, Retired Police Major Sebastian Chua, said.

Chua added that the confiscated items would still be presented to Mayor Rolando Uy for a decision on whether they should be returned to their owners.

“Well kung mubalik sila ato rana ipatawag kang Mayor if ever mao gyud mga gahi then we will file charges against them,” Chua said.
