A policeman and two suspects were killed in an armed confrontation during an operation against the illegal possession and sale of loose firearms in Pagadian City, Zamboanga del Sur, on Sunday, August 23, 2026.

The Philippine National Police (PNP) identified the police officer as Major Aiman Khuzaimah Pantaran, an intelligence officer assigned to the Pagadian City Police Station.

Police said the subjects of the operation allegedly opened fire after sensing that they were dealing with police officers.

During the exchange of fire, a police officer sustained a gunshot wound in the chest. He was brought to a hospital but was declared dead on arrival.

Meanwhile, the two suspects were also injured during the encounter and died on the spot.

Authorities are still investigating to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.

PNP Chief General Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. expressed his sympathies to Pantaran’s family and colleagues and emphasized the importance of discipline and accountability in every police operation.

“We recognize the ultimate sacrifice of our police officer and extend our deepest condolences to his family. At the same time, we will carefully establish what happened and ensure that the proper procedures are followed. Sa bawat operasyon, mahalaga ang tapang, pero kaakibat nito ang disiplina at pananagutan,” Nartatez said.
