Raymund Torio of Lingayen, Pangasinan was crowned overall champion in the Powerman Malaysia 2025 on June 22, 2025 in Dataran Putrajaya, Malaysia.
Powerman is dubbed the “world’s biggest duathlon” event.
The former University of Luzon standout finished first out of more than 1,100 participants in the open classic category after clocking 02:50:59.
“Overwhelming pa rin kasi tayo yung nag-claim ng gold sa Powerman Malaysia this time” Torion told GMA Regional TV News.
In a social media post, Torio described his triumph as “the right time at the right place”.
“Mamimili tayo kung saan tayo pwedeng mag-shine. Kumbaga pipiliin natin yung tamang preparasyon para dun sa tamang lugar at saka tamang oras… yun na yung pinagtetraining mo within the months,” he explained.
Last November 2024, Torio also secured the gold medal in the Singapore national duathlon championships.
Now a full-time coach of the Philippine national triathlon team, Torio juggles his time between being a trainer and elite athlete.
“Sinisingit ko na lang kasi mas focused tayo sa coaching ng national athletes. Although napapasabay naman tayo sa training nila… learning na rin kasi pinag-aralan yung mga trainings, mga recoveries kaya ‘yun na rin ‘yung mga natutunan ko; tinitignan ko if applicable siya kasi iba-iba naman tayo ng katawan,” Torio said.
The former national PRISAA long distance event silver medalist aims to inspire athletes from the grassroots of pursuing their dream of representing flag and country one day.
“Malaking bagay to para ma-inspire yung mga bata na magtuloy-tuloy,” he said.
Torio is also focused on guiding national athletes who will be competing in the 33rd Southeast Asian Games in Thailand in December 2025.
Meanwhile, Tarlac native Elaine Quismundo bagged the bronze medal in the Short Open 16+ Female category recording a 01:39:44 finish.
