The Gilas Pilipinas national team faltered in the second half to fall to South Korea, 97-95, in the Asian Games basketball tournament on Saturday in Incheon.

The Philippine team played without Marcus Douthit, who was benched all game after coach Chot Reyes blasted the naturalized center for his lack of effort in Gilas' loss on Thursday against Qatar.

But despite missing Douthit, Gilas started out on fire, taking a 16-point lead in the first half.

But the hosts rallied in the third quarter, cutting the Philippine lead to a single point heading into the final period, 72-71.

Gilas had its last taste of the lead with 1:18 remaining on a split from LA Tenorio. But South Korea stringed together the next five points, and the Philippines couldn't execute down the stretch to suffer its third straight defeat.

Korean-American forward TJ Moon scored 36 points to lead his team's uprising. Gilas captain Jimmy Alapag was once again brilliant in his last international tournament, scoring 25 points to try to carry the Philippines.

After losing its first two games in the quarterfinals, Gilas still has a slim chance to make it to the final four. But the Philippines' fate is out of the team's hands, as it has to hope for a Kazakhstan win on Saturday over Qatar. Gilas would then need to beat Kazakhstan by a big margin to qualify into the final four. — JST, GMA News
